Online Courses in Archaeology with the University of Oxford

Cave paintings, castles and pyramids, Neanderthals, Romans and Vikings - archaeology is about the excitement of discovery, finding out about our ancestors, exploring landscape through time, piecing together puzzles of the past from material remains.

Our courses enable you to experience all this through online archaeological resources based on primary evidence from excavations and artefacts and from complex scientific processes and current thinking. Together with guided reading, discussion and activities you can experience how archaeologists work today to increase our knowledge of people and societies from the past.

Twenty Years of Oxford Experience

The sun is shining, the participants are arriving and we are all set to start our twentieth year of Oxford Experience.

As well as the courses on the programme, we have several special optional events this week:

Monday afternoon – a walking tour of Oxford

Tuesday afternoon – a tour of Christ Church which reaches those parts of the college that visitors don’t get to see

Tuesday evening – ‘Morse and Me’ a talk by Colin Dexter

Wednesday afternoon – Excursion to Blenheim Palace or ‘Alice in Waterland’ walk

Wednesday evening – malt whisky tasting

Thursday evening – ‘Tales out of Court and thoughts on the English Legal System’ a talk by Val Dodd

Making Time Team

A very special event for the first week of Oxford Experience is the lecture by Mick Aston on “Making Time Team” which will be in Lecture Room 2 after dinner on Thursday, 3 July. Time Team has become the most popular archaeology television programme ever produced, and Mick’s talk is guaranteed to be both entertaining and informative.

Looking forward to my time in Oxford

It is raining in Alzenau, Germany - it has been raining for days and days. I know everyone thinks this is probably the best preparation for England. And although I certainly hope for some sun in Oxford what is really important to me is going back to college. Learning something new - meeting old friends and making new friends - enjoying the atmosphere of Christ Church - and the wonderful food in the splendid Hall.

Only a few more days to wait! Heathrow get ready!

Recital with Lars Lettner

We were delighted to find that one of the Oxford Experience participants in week five was Lars Lettner, the German Opera singer. Lars had abandoned opera for the week to study astronomy and was taking the “Strange Universe“ course.

On the Friday, Lars gave a short recital of sacred music in the Cathedral, where he was accompanied on piano by Nancy Graham, one of the Oxford Summer School in Theology participants.

It was a wonderful chance for us to hear Lars sing – in fact one of the Cathedral stewards begged him to return to sing again.

Welcome to Week Five!

Welcome to week five of Oxford Experience 2006.

If you have arrived today in Christ Church, we hope that you have had a pleasant journey and look forward to meeting you during the coming week.

Today we have an orientation meeting in the Upper Library (in Peckwater Quad), followed by a wine reception in Tom Quad and dinner in Hall.

After dinner, you will meet up with your tutors for a brief informal welcome session in the tutorial room, so that on Monday morning everyone knows where they should be when classes begin at 9:15.

The weather should be good for the week – not as hot as the previous weeks, but still warm and fine.

What a wonderful start to week 4! Have a look at some of the pictures from the reception in Tom Quad after the orientation meeting. The sun was shining and it was so pleasant outside. We all feel very privileged to be able to study and stay here in this splendid college. After dinner we had our first informal meeting with our tutor and have met our fellow students. I am sure we are all looking forward to a most interesting week of studying and interacting!

A very warm welcome to all of you who are arriving today for week 4 of the Oxford Experience and to those of you who are arriving for the Oxford Experience / New York programme.

The Oxford Experience Weblog is intended to give you a chance to write about your Oxford Experience while you are here and to help Ox Ex members keep in touch during those other months of the year when you are away from Oxford.

The weather here in Oxford is a little dull at the moment, but the forecast is for sunny weather to follow.

A very warm welcome to the new Oxford Experience weblog!

We are now in week 3 of this year's programme and hope we can reach out to friends and family all over the world. We would like to keep you informed about what is happening here in the course of the next few weeks and share our special moments and enthusiasm with you.

The weather in Oxford is fantastic right now and all the participants are looking forward to their first official meeting in the Christ Church library, a wine reception in Tom Quad , followed by dinner in Hall and a first informal meeting with tutors and fellow students later in the evening.
